The freezing weather that has frozen most of Europe solid has once again raised some tensions over Russia’s role as supplier of natural gas to its neighboring countries. On Friday, a OAO Gazprom (PINK: OGZPY.PK ) official , whose stock price is up over 40% since early October, 2011, proclaimed that Ukraine was being greedy by taking more than its share from the Gazprom natural gas pipeline that runs through its territory.
Just a few years after tensions over the natural gas prices between Moscow and Kiev in 2006 and 2009, this came as an awkward reminder that when demand soars, it’s still every nation for itself.
Andrei Kruglov, CFO of Gazprom, admitted that the blame lay not with Ukraine but rather with his company’s export capacity. “Gazprom at the moment cannot supply the extra volumes our West European partners are asking for,” he told President Putin according to Reuters. With the cold in Russia increasing demand there as well, Russia reduced the amount of gas for a few days that it was putting into the pipeline in the first place.

OGZPY traded as high as $12.70 in Friday’s trading session.
OGZPY closing price Friday, February 3rd was $12.69, up +2.34% (+0.29).
OGZPY traded volume of 822,937.
OGZPY is trading:
- $ 0.23 above its 200 day moving average,
- $ 1.45 above its 50 day moving average and
- $ 0.49 above its 10 day moving average.
OGZPY Six Month Chart:
OGZPY has a Market Cap of $145.79B with a 5.55B Share Float.
The good news here is that many of Gazprom’s customers have increased with stockpiles, and so the 10% decrease many experienced did not cause any enduring hardship. With gas from the pipeline selling at record prices (more than US$400 per 1,000 cubic meters), alternatives are coming on line, which will help diversify supply, including liquefied natural gas.
And Russia is not the only source of natgas. For example, Norway is maintaining its reputation as a reliable supplier to the UK.
Because of the cold, UK demand was just shy of 378 million cubic metres (mcm) on Saturday, about 63.5 mcm higher that usual. Still, flows from Norway continued at 380 mcm.
